MillerKnoll sponsored our junior studio for the higher education project in the Fall 2022 semester. Students were assigned a building on campus to focus on redesigning the 3rd spaces using exclusively MillerKnoll family brands. The 3rd space becomes a pivotal location on the college campus, offering opportunities for refuge, collaboration, or socialization. These spaces are often forgotten leaving missed chances to unite students and provide inclusivity.
I was assigned Hagerty Hall which is an integral building for the College of Arts and Sciences housing language, literature, and religious studies. This project included preliminary research to understand user needs and pain points which influenced the design of the third space. The research included first-hand interviews, surveys, and workshops with Ohio State students and staff. Below is the process of my project exploring the history, the problems/pain points, the solution/strategies, and finally the redesign of the space.
